A burst flexi hose under the kitchen sink is a common way a night here turns bad, and it rarely gives any warning first.

The suburb grew from 1885, and a wave of returning WWI soldiers settled here through the 1920s, leaving pre-war brick and semi-detached cottages on the older streets. A run of 1950s shop-and-dwelling rows followed along Balmoral Road.
